Because your and you’re sound exactly the same (homophones), they are frequently confused in writing. Follow these distinct grammatical rules to avoid mistakes.

? Possessive Adjective: Your

Use your to show ownership or that something belongs/relates to the person you are currently talking to. It must always modify a noun.

Structure: your + noun (or your + adjective + noun)
  • Bring your favorite music to the party. (Your specifies whose music)
  • Your parents will pick you up. (The parents belonging to you)
  • All of your hard work has paid off. (The work done by you)

⚡ Contraction: You’re

Use you’re strictly as a short way of writing or saying “you are”. It combines the subject pronoun you and the verb are.
