Grammar Theory
1. Independent Clauses
An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. It can stand alone as a simple sentence.
- Katy (Subject) + visited (Verb) + Hawaii (Object).
- Dolphins (Subject) + are (Verb) + very intelligent (Complement).
- The weather (Subject) + was (Verb) + beautiful (Complement).
2. Coordinating Conjunctions in Compound Sentences
A compound sentence joins two related independent clauses together using a comma and a coordinating conjunction. For this level, we focus on four common conjunctions: and, but, or, and so.
| Conjunction | Usage / Meaning | Example Compound Sentence |
|---|---|---|
| and | Adds similar information or ideas. | She visited three islands, and she loved every minute of it. |
| but | Shows contrast or surprise. | Dolphins look like fish, but they are actually mammals. |
| or | Presents alternative choices. | We can study dolphin behavior, or we can swim with them. |
| so | Shows a result or consequence. | Dolphins are social, so they often play with people. |
⚠️ Crucial Punctuation Rule
Never forget the comma (,) before the coordinating conjunction! Writing “Dolphins are social so they play with people” without a comma is a punctuation error. Always place the comma right at the end of the first clause.

- False – The comma belongs before the conjunction, not after it. (Sai, dấu phẩy nằm trước liên từ)
- True – It correctly joins two separate independent thoughts with “, and”. (Đúng, câu ghép chuẩn mực cấu trúc)
- True – It contains a subject and a verb and functions as a full thought. (Đúng, có đủ chủ vị và ý nghĩa hoàn chỉnh)
