Unit 14: Possessive Nouns Review

Grammar Focus: Showing Ownership

A possessive noun shows who or what owns or has something. We use an apostrophe () and the letter s to form possessives.

  • Singular Possessive: For a singular noun (one person, place, or thing), add ‘s.
Example: the boy’s book, the boat’s markings.
  • Plural Possessive (ending in s): Forplural nouns that end in s, add only an apostrophe ().
Example: the islanders’ boats, the girls’ team.
  • Plural Possessive (irregular): For plural nouns that do not end in s, add ‘s.
Example: the oarsmen’s response, the men’s oars.

Advanced Tip: Pay close attention to collective nouns like tribe or family. If the noun is singular, treat it as singular (tribe’s custom). If it is plural, treat it as plural (tribes’ customs).
