2. Grammar Focus & Rules

Noun Suffixes (-ness and -tion)

Adding -ness to an adjective or -tion to a verb changes the word into a noun representing a state, quality, or action.

Structure Adjective + -ness / Verb + -tion
Key Concepts
  • -ness forms nouns from adjectives (e.g., sad → sadness, kind → kindness). If an adjective ends in -y, change it to -i before adding -ness (e.g., weary → weariness).
  • -tion forms nouns from verbs (e.g., create → creation, elect → election). If a verb ends in -e, drop the -e before adding -tion.
Examples • The sadness in the movie made her cry.
• Please pay attention to the teacher.
• The election for class president is next week.

Adjective Suffixes (-able and -less)

Adding -able to a verb means “can be done.” Adding -less to a noun means “without.” Both suffixes convert base words into adjectives.

Structure Verb + -able / Noun + -less
Key Concepts
  • -able shows capability or worthiness. If a verb ends in -e, sometimes it is dropped (e.g., value → valuable) or kept if it maintains a soft sound (e.g., agree → agreeable).
  • -less means entirely lacking or devoid of that specific thing (e.g., care → careless, hope → hopeless). It forms the exact opposite meaning of the noun.
Examples • This warm jacket is washable in the machine.
• The fearless dog chased the intruder away.
• It is a senseless idea to go out in the storm.
