Unit 17: Linking Verbs

What is a Linking Verb?

A linking verb does not express an action. Instead, it connects (or links) the subject of the sentence to a word in the predicate that names or describes the subject. Think of a linking verb as an equal sign (=) between the subject and the rest of the sentence. The word that follows the linking verb identifies or describes the subject.

Common Linking Verbs

The most common linking verbs are forms of the verb be: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been. Other verbs can also act as linking verbs, especially those related to the five senses or a state of being: appear, become, feel, grow, look, remain, seem, smell, sound, stay, taste, turn.

Tip: Some verbs can be action verbs in one sentence and linking verbs in another. To test if a verb is a linking verb, try replacing itwith is or was. If the sentence still makes sense, it is likely a linking verb.
