2. Grammar Theory: Appositive Phrases

Grammar Point 1: Identifying Appositive Phrases

An appositive is a noun or a noun phrase that directly follows another noun or pronoun to identify, clarify, or rename it. It provides extra descriptive context without starting a new clause.

Structure: Noun + [Appositive Phrase]

Examples:

  • Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, is a great place to visit.
  • Lansing is the capital of Michigan, the Great Lakes State.
  • My friend, a talented singer, won the competition.
[IMAGE GENERATION PROMPT: A wide graphic showing maps of famous US states like Delaware and California, highlighting landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge or historic documents with clean design labels that connect states to their famous nicknames.]

Grammar Point 2: Punctuating Appositives with Commas

When an appositive adds extra (non-essential) information, it must be separated from the rest of the sentence using commas. If the appositive is placed in the middle of the sentence, use two commas. If it’s at the end, use one comma before it. If you remove the appositive, the sentence remains grammatically complete.

Structure: Subject, [Appositive Phrase], Verb + Object…

Examples:

  • Delaware, the first state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, is nicknamed the Diamond State.
  • The Statue of Liberty is located in New York, the Empire State.
  • Mr. Harris, our school principal, gave a speech today.

? Click to see Answer Key & Explanation (Đáp án & Giải thích)
  • 1. B: “the capital of New York” renames the proper noun Albany. (Cụm danh từ bổ nghĩa và định danh lại cho Albany).
  • 2. C: Non-essential appositives in the middle require pairs of commas on both sides. (Cần đi kèm cặp dấu phẩy ngăn cách mệnh đề phụ độc lập).
  • 3. B: An appositive phrase must start with a noun phrase, not a verb like “is”. (“a remote city…” là cụm danh từ thích hợp làm cụm đồng vị).
  • 4. C: “their primary source of income” clarifies “the soil”. (Cụm đồng vị phía sau bổ nghĩa trực tiếp cho danh từ “the soil”).
  • 5. A: “the land of new hope” serves as a proper clarifying noun phrase at the end. (“the land…” đồng vị bổ nghĩa cho danh từ soil đứng liền trước).

? Click to see Answer Key & Explanation (Đáp án & Giải thích)
  • 1. T: Non-essential appositives are extra information and can be removed cleanly. (Đúng, có thể bỏ cụm này đi mà câu vẫn đủ nghĩa ngữ pháp).
  • 2. F: Appositives are noun phrases, meaning they do not contain main conjugated verbs. (Sai, cụm đồng vị bản chất là cụm danh từ, không chứa động từ chính chia thì).
  • 3. T: If the phrase ends the sentence, you place a comma before it and a period at the end. (Đúng, khi ở cuối câu chỉ cần một dấu phẩy phía trước).
  • 4. F: “centrally located” here acts as an attributive adjective phrase modifying “capital”. (Sai, đây là cụm tính từ đứng trước bổ nghĩa thông thường, không phải cụm đồng vị).
  • 5. T: Appositives are placed immediately after the noun they aim to rename or describe. (Đúng, vị trí của cụm đồng vị luôn đứng sát sau danh từ nó làm rõ).
  • 6. F: “the first state” renames the proper subject noun “Delaware”, not “the document”. (Sai, cụm “the first state” là bổ nghĩa đồng vị cho Delaware).
