What is an Adverb?

An adverb is a word that modifies (describes) a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Adverbs provide more information about an action,telling us how, when, where, how often, or to what extent something happens.

Formation: Many adverbs are formed by adding -ly to an adjective.

  • Rule 1: Add -ly (e.g., quick → quickly).
  • Rule 2: Forwords ending in -y, change y to i and add -ly (e.g., busy → busily).
  • Rule 3: For words ending in -le, drop the e and add -y (e.g., gentle → gently).
