Explanation A sentence that joins two independent clauses (complete thoughts) using a comma and a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so). In this unit, we focus on and, but, or, so.

Complex & Compound-Complex Sentences

Explanation Complex sentences combine one independent clause with at least one dependent clause (starts with a subordinating conjunction like because, although, if, when, which, who).

Compound-complex sentences contain at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
Structure Complex: Independent Clause + Dependent Clause OR Dependent Clause + , + Independent Clause
Compound-Complex: Dependent Clause + , + Independent Clause + Conjunction + Independent Clause
