2. Grammar Theory
Point 1: Semicolons to Join Independent Clauses
Use a semicolon (;) to join two independent clauses (complete sentences) that are closely related in meaning. This avoids using a coordinating conjunction such as and, but, or so.
Core Rules:
- Both sides of the semicolon must be complete thoughts with their own subject and verb.
- Do not capitalize the word immediately after the semicolon unless it is a proper noun or the pronoun “I”.
Examples:
- I have a lot of work; I will stay late tonight.
- The cat is sleeping; the dog is playing outside.
- My father likes coffee; my mother prefers tea.
Point 2: Semicolons with Conjunctive Adverbs
Use a semicolon before transition words or conjunctive adverbs (like however, therefore, indeed, besides) when they connect two independent sentences. Always place a comma immediately after the transition word.
Examples:
- The rain was heavy; however, we still went for a walk.
- The store was closed; therefore, we went home.
- The task was difficult; indeed, it took all day to finish.
3. Practice Exercises
Match the word or phrase on the left (1-7) with its correct definition/context option on the right (A-G).

- 1 – B: accident = an unexpected, unfortunate event. (tai nạn = sự cố bất ngờ, không may)
- 2 – D: injured = physically hurt. (bị thương = chấn thương về mặt thể xác)
- 3 – F: therefore = for that precise reason. (vì vậy = vì lý do chính xác đó)
- 4 – A: lead role = the principal actor’s character. (vai chính = nhân vật của diễn viên chính)
- 5 – E: however = used to transition to a contrasting viewpoint. (tuy nhiên = dùng để chuyển sang ý trái ngược)
- 6 – G: indeed = truly or undeniably; used for emphasis. (thực sự = quả thực, dùng để nhấn mạnh)
- 7 – C: strict = rigidly enforcing rules. (nghiêm khắc = thực thi luật lệ một cách cứng rắn)

- 1. therefore: Expresses a cause-effect relationship between heavy downpours and canceling plans. (Dự báo mưa lớn; do đó, chúng tôi hủy buổi dã ngoại.)
- 2. strict / however: First blank requires the adjective ‘strict’. The second blank introduces a contrast to being strict. (Thầy Harrison rất nghiêm khắc; tuy nhiên, thầy luôn thưởng cho học sinh cố gắng.)
- 3. besides / lead role: ‘Besides’ adds an extra reason (lack of time) for not joining, and ‘lead role’ fits rehearsals. (Cô ấy không muốn tham gia câu lạc bộ kịch; ngoài ra, cô ấy không có thời gian tập luyện cho vai chính.)
- 4. accident / however / injured: ‘Accident’ establishes the event; ‘however’ introduces the lucky contrast; ‘injured’ matches being hurt. (Seth và Victor gặp tai nạn giao thông; tuy nhiên, không ai bị thương nặng.)
- 5. indeed: Emphasizes and reinforces just how outstanding the Broadway play is. (Vở kịch mới rất xuất sắc; thực sự, nó đã nhận được điểm số tuyệt đối.)
- 6. therefore: Shows the result of the museum being closed (going to the art gallery instead). (Bảo tàng đóng cửa; vì vậy, đoàn chúng tôi đi thăm triển lãm nghệ thuật.)
Choose the option that uses semicolons and commas correctly according to standard grammatical patterns.
-
1. Which sentence is punctuated perfectly?
-
2. Identify the correct usage of a conjunctive adverb:
-
3. Choose the grammatically sound statement:
-
4. Which sentence correctly connects two simple clauses without an adverb?
-
5. Identify the error-free punctuation sentence:
-
6. Select the correct sentence containing ‘besides’:
? Click to see Answer Key & Explanation (Đáp án & Giải thích)
- 1. A: Connects two independent clauses seamlessly. B is a comma splice, C has an incorrect capital letter ‘She’, and D is a run-on sentence. (A đúng. B lỗi phẩy nối, C viết hoa sai chữ She, D thiếu dấu.)
- 2. C: Follows the formula exactly: semicolon before ‘however’ and a comma right after. (C đúng cấu trúc: chấm phẩy + trạng từ + dấu phẩy.)
- 3. A: Correctly introduces ‘therefore’ between two independent clauses with proper punctuation. (A đúng cấu trúc nguyên nhân – kết quả với đầy đủ dấu chấm phẩy và dấu phẩy.)
- 4. A: Joins two related independent clauses. The first letter of the second clause (‘we’) should remain lowercase. (A đúng vì nối hai vế liên quan và không viết hoa chữ ‘we’.)
- 5. A: Uses a semicolon before ‘indeed’ and a comma after it, keeping ‘indeed’ in lowercase. (A đúng cấu trúc nhấn mạnh với ‘indeed’ viết thường.)
- 6. A: Accurately punctuates the addition of an argument using ‘; besides,’. (A đúng cấu trúc bổ sung thông tin với ‘; besides,’.)
State whether the following statements regarding semicolon rules are True (T) or False (F).
- 1. You should always capitalize the first word that follows a semicolon, regardless of what kind of word it is. (____)
- 2. A semicolon can be used to join two independent clauses that are closely linked in meaning. (____)
- 3. Using a comma alone to join two independent clauses without a coordinating conjunction creates a grammar error known as a “comma splice”. (____)
- 4. When connecting sentences using words like however or therefore, a comma belongs before the word and a semicolon belongs after it. (____)
- 5. The clauses on both sides of a semicolon must be full, complete independent sentences capable of standing alone. (____)
- 6. A semicolon must always be accompanied by coordinating conjunctions like and, but, or or. (____)
? Click to see Answer Key & Explanation (Đáp án & Giải thích)

- 2. True: This is the primary function of a semicolon when avoiding coordinate conjunctions. (Đúng: Đây là chức năng chính của dấu chấm phẩy khi kết hợp câu liên quan ý nghĩa.)
- 3. True: Merging two full sentences with just a comma causes a major comma splice error. (Đúng: Lỗi dùng dấu phẩy nối hai câu độc lập mà không có từ nối gọi là ‘comma splice’.)
- 4. False: The semicolon goes before the adverb, and the comma goes after it. (Sai: Dấu chấm phẩy đứng trước trạng từ nối, còn dấu phẩy đứng sau nó.)
- 5. True: Semicolons cannot connect a dependent fragment to an independent sentence. (Đúng: Hai vế quanh dấu chấm phẩy bắt buộc phải là các câu độc lập hoàn chỉnh.)
- 6. False: Semicolons replace coordinating conjunctions; they are not used together. (Sai: Dấu chấm phẩy dùng để thay thế các từ nối như ‘and’, ‘but’, không đi kèm chúng.)
