2. Grammar Theory
In English, action verbs can be divided into two main categories based on whether they require a direct object to complete their meaning: Transitive Verbs and Intransitive Verbs.
? Transitive Verbs (Ngoại động từ)
A transitive verb is an action verb that requires a direct object to complete its meaning. Without an object, the sentence feels incomplete or confusing because the action has no recipient.
Examples:
- Tom joined the theater arts club. (What did Tom join? -> the theater arts club)
- He memorized his lines. (What did he memorize? -> his lines)
- The teacher directed the rehearsals. (What did the teacher direct? -> the rehearsals)
? Intransitive Verbs (Nội động từ)
An intransitive verb is an action verb that does not need a direct object to make sense. It expresses an action that starts and ends with the subject. However, it can be followed by modifiers like adverbs or prepositional phrases to give more information.
Examples:
- He acts quite well. (‘quite well’ is an adverbial phrase modifying how he acts, not a direct object)
- Tom’s audition began shakily. (‘shakily’ is an adverb describing how it began)
- The audience cheered wildly. (‘wildly’ is an adverb describing the cheering)
⚠️ Verbs That Can Be Both
Some verbs, like practice or rehearse, can function as both transitive and intransitive depending on the context.
- Transitive: He practiced each scene until it was perfect. (Object: ‘each scene’)
- Intransitive: The students rehearsed every day after school. (‘every day’ is a time modifier, not an object)
