2. Grammar & Usage Rules (Ngữ pháp & Cách dùng)

Interjections are words or phrases used to express sudden emotions or reactions. They stand grammatically independent from the rest of the sentence. In English writing, we generally categorize them into two groups based on intensity:

⚡ Strong Interjections (Thán từ mạnh)

Strong interjections show very intense, sudden, or deep feelings. They are strong enough to stand alone as separate sentences or dominate the emotional tone.

Punctuation Rule: Followed strictly by an exclamation point (!).
[Interjection]! + [Sentence]
  • Hooray! We won the championship. (Great joy/victory)
  • Ouch! That really hurts my arm. (Sudden physical pain)
  • Help! I am lost in the woods. (Urgent assistance)

? Mild Interjections (Thán từ nhẹ)

Mild interjections display softer emotions, hesitation, polite transitions, or casual attention. They do not represent a sudden burst of distress or extreme excitement.

Punctuation Rule: Separated from the rest of the sentence by a comma (,).
[Interjection], + [Sentence].
  • Oh, I didn’t know you were coming. (Mild realization)
  • Well, I guess we can try again tomorrow. (Hesitation/Transition)
  • Hey, do you know what time it is? (Casual attention-seeking)

Determine if the punctuation and categorization applied to the interjection in each sentence is grammatically True (T) or False (F).

  1. Well! I think we should go.” is correctly punctuated because ‘Well’ is always a highly intense, strong interjection. (____)

  5. Oh no! The bridge is collapsing!” uses the phrase correctly to express extreme alarm. (____)
  6. Interjections form a structural, necessary part of the subject-verb core predicate in English grammar. (____)
? Click to see Answer Key & Explanation (Đáp án & Giải thích)
1. False: ‘Well’ is primarily a mild interjection meant for hesitation or transition; it rarely takes an independent exclamation mark unless highly stylized.Sai vì ‘Well’ thường là thán từ nhẹ, đi với dấu phẩy chứ không phải dấu chấm than độc lập.
2. True: The statement is true because the sentence provided was written incorrectly; sudden pain demands an exclamation mark (“Ouch!”).Đúng, vì câu khẳng định rằng viết dấu phẩy sau Ouch là sai (nó cần dấu !).
3. True: Mild interjections are structurally defined by their attachment via a trailing comma.Đúng, thán từ nhẹ luôn được ngăn cách bằng dấu phẩy.
4. True: Strong interjections followed by exclamation marks can stand as autonomous fragments in speech/writing.Đúng, thán từ mạnh có thể đứng độc lập làm một câu cảm thán ngắn.
5. True: “Oh no!” perfectly fits high-alarm situations like structural disasters.Đúng, cụm thán từ này chỉ sự hoảng hốt, báo động nghiêm trọng.
6. False: Interjections are grammatically separate; they do not serve as subjects, objects, or verbs inside the core phrase.Sai, thán từ hoàn toàn độc lập và không đóng vai trò chủ ngữ hay vị ngữ trong cấu trúc chính câu.
Exercise 5: Sentence Reordering (Sắp xếp lại câu chứa thán từ) Sentence Reordering

Rearrange the scrambled words and punctuation elements to form a coherent, properly capitalized sentence.

  1. won / team / Hooray / our / ! / match / the

1. Hooray! Our team won the match.Thán từ mạnh đứng đầu đi kèm dấu chấm than, viết hoa chủ ngữ tiếp theo.
2. Oops! I dropped my homework into a puddle.Oops! chỉ lỗi lầm vụng về nhỏ làm bẩn bài tập về nhà.

5. Oh, look at that cute puppy.Thán từ nhẹ ‘Oh’ bộc lộ cảm xúc thích thú nhẹ khi nhìn chú cún.
6. Help! I need immediate assistance.Cấu trúc khẩn cấp kêu gọi sự giúp đỡ khẩn nài lập tức.
Exercise 6: Grammar Selection (Chọn dấu câu & Sửa lỗi) Grammar Selection

  6. Which option describes why a comma is used after “Well”?

    B. Because it represents a mild pause or transition in ongoing thought.
    C. Because it acts as an imperative action verb.
? Click to see Answer Key & Explanation (Đáp án & Giải thích)
1. B: A comma works best for routine attention grabbing without dramatic emergency.Chọn B vì dùng dấu phẩy cho lời gọi ‘Hey’ nhẹ nhàng thông thường.
2. C: ‘Rats’ can behave as a mild frustration (with a comma) or a strong exclamation (with an exclamation point) based entirely on situational stress.Chọn C vì thán từ chỉ sự bực dọc có thể mạnh hay nhẹ tùy tâm trạng nói.
3. B: An exclamation point ends a sentence unit; therefore, the following word must begin with a capital letter.Chọn B vì sau dấu chấm than bắt buộc phải viết hoa chữ cái đầu (‘That’).
4. C: ‘Help’ usually represents a direct panic or hazard, making a comma highly unnatural and potentially dangerous in text comprehension.Chọn C vì từ cứu giúp khẩn cấp gần như không đi kèm với dấu phẩy giảm nhẹ.
5. A: A twisted ankle is a sudden painful physical event requiring ‘Ouch!’ and subsequent sentence capitalization.Chọn A vì chấn thương khớp cá chân cần thán từ mạnh và viết hoa từ kế tiếp.
6. B: Commas structurally reflect subtle pauses, hesitations, or conversational pacing changes.Chọn B vì dấu phẩy sau ‘Well’ báo hiệu một quãng nghỉ ngắn hoặc chuyển ý nhẹ nhàng.
