Applying Punctuation Knowledge
1. Target Vocabulary (Từ vựng mục tiêu)
2. Grammar Focus (Trọng tâm Ngữ pháp)
Grammar Point 1: Punctuating Direct Speech (Dấu câu trong Lời nói Trực tiếp)
Explanation: Use quotation marks to show exactly what someone said, and use a comma to separate the speaker tag from the quote.
Structure:
Speaker + said, "Quote." or "Quote," + speaker + said.
| Pattern Type | Sentence Structure Example | Explanation in Vietnamese |
|---|---|---|
| Tag at the beginning | Martie said, “You are a good actor.” | Dấu phẩy đứng sau từ dẫn (said), dấu chấm câu nằm bên trong dấu ngoặc kép cuối câu. |
| Tag at the end | “Clean your room,” Mom commanded. | Dấu phẩy nằm bên trong dấu ngoặc kép để ngăn cách lời thoại và từ dẫn phía sau. |
| Question in direct speech | “Would you like to dance?” he asked. | Dấu chấm hỏi nằm bên trong dấu ngoặc kép; từ dẫn phía sau không viết hoa chữ cái đầu. |
Grammar Point 2: Commas in Lists and Direct Address (Dấu phẩy trong Danh sách và Hô ngữ)
Explanation: Use commas to separate three or more items in a series, and use a comma after a person’s name when you are speaking directly to them (or before if the name is at the end).
Structure:
Item 1, item 2, and item 3. / Name, [sentence].
| Grammar Rule | Sentence Example | Notes & Translation |
|---|---|---|
| Items in a series (Danh sách) | Please get eggs, milk, and cereal from the store. | Dấu phẩy phân tách các món đồ. Dấu phẩy trước “and” gọi là Oxford comma. |
| Direct Address (Hô ngữ đầu câu) | Jason, please don’t interrupt. | Đặt dấu phẩy ngay sau tên người được gọi trực tiếp để tránh gây nhầm lẫn. |
| Direct Address (Hô ngữ cuối câu) | I have already finished my homework, Mom. | Nếu gọi tên ở cuối câu, đặt dấu phẩy ngay trước tên người đó. |
