The Rules of “ie” and “ei”

Spelling inEnglish can be tricky, but there are patterns to help you. One of the most famous rhymes is: Write i before e, except after c, or when sounded like a as in neighbor and weigh.

  • Rule 1 (Normal): Most words use ie (e.g., friend, believe, field).
  • Rule 2 (After C): If the vowel sound follows the letter c, use ei (e.g., receive, ceiling, deceit).
  • Rule 3 (Sound of A): If the vowels make an /a/ sound, use ei (e.g., neighbor, sleigh, vein).
  • Rule 4 (Exceptions): Some words break these rules and mustbe memorized. Common exceptions include seize, either, weird, and leisure.
