2. Grammar & Usage Theory
Point 1: Confusing Verbs (Sit/Set and Lie/Lay)
Sit and Lie are intransitive verbs. This means they do not take a direct object. They describe a body position or location.
Set and Lay are transitive verbs. They require a direct object to receive the action. They mean putting or placing something down.

Point 2: Homophones (Your vs. You’re)
Because they sound exactly the same, your and you’re are frequently misspelled in writing.
- Your is a possessive adjective. It must be followed by a noun to show possession or ownership.
- You’re is a contraction of the two words “you are”. It is followed by an adjective, noun phrase, or a verb ending in -ing.
Examples:
- Your pencils (noun) lie neatly in your pencil box (noun).
- You’re always prepared (adjective) for the lesson.
- I think you’re a very helpful friend (noun phrase).
