Unit 68: Word Usage: Lie or Lay
Can-do Statement: I can correctly distinguish between and use the verbs ‘lie’ and ‘lay’.

2. Grammar Explanations
The Intransitive Verb ‘Lie’
Use ‘lie’ when the subject is resting or reclining. It does not take a direct object. The action stays with the subject performing it.
Structure: Subject + lie/lies (+ prepositional phrase)
- The child was sick and could do nothing but lie in bed.
- When I feel lazy, I just lie on the couch and watch television.
- My dogs Shaggy and Trevor lie in the sun.
The Transitive Verb ‘Lay’
Use ‘lay’ when you are putting or placing an object down. This verb requires a direct object to receive the action.
Structure: Subject + lay/lays + Direct Object (+ prepositional phrase)
- I will lay my cards (Object) on the table for you.
- Will you lay the baby (Object) in his crib?
- I lay my bag (Object) on the chair.
