Grammar Theory

1. Independent Clauses

An independent clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. It can stand alone as a simple sentence.

Structure: Subject + Verb + (Object/Complement)
  • Katy (Subject) + visited (Verb) + Hawaii (Object).
  • Dolphins (Subject) + are (Verb) + very intelligent (Complement).
  • The weather (Subject) + was (Verb) + beautiful (Complement).

2. Coordinating Conjunctions in Compound Sentences

A compound sentence joins two related independent clauses together using a comma and a coordinating conjunction. For this level, we focus on four common conjunctions: and, but, or, and so.

Structure: Independent Clause + , + Conjunction + Independent Clause
Conjunction Usage / Meaning Example Compound Sentence
and Adds similar information or ideas. She visited three islands, and she loved every minute of it.
but Shows contrast or surprise. Dolphins look like fish, but they are actually mammals.
or Presents alternative choices. We can study dolphin behavior, or we can swim with them.
so Shows a result or consequence. Dolphins are social, so they often play with people.
[IMAGE GENERATION PROMPT: A clear, colorful grammar infographic visualizing how two train cars (Independent Clause 1 and Independent Clause 2) are hooked together by a link containing a comma and a conjunction like ‘and’ or ‘but’.]

⚠️ Crucial Punctuation Rule

Never forget the comma (,) before the coordinating conjunction! Writing “Dolphins are social so they play with people” without a comma is a punctuation error. Always place the comma right at the end of the first clause.
