2. Grammar Theory: Independent Clauses
Grammar Point 1: Defining Independent Clauses
An independent clause is a group of words that contains both a subject (who or what performs the action) and a verb/predicate (the action or state of being), and it successfully expresses a complete thought.
Structure:
Subject + Predicate (Verb + other information)
Examples:
- I (Subject) + know Mr. Fletcher (Predicate).
- The sun (Subject) + came up (Predicate).
- Maria (Subject) + is a letter carrier (Predicate).

Grammar Point 2: Independent Clauses as Complete Sentences
Because an independent clause makes sense entirely on its own, it can be written as a standalone, standalone full sentence. When doing this, it must follow standard punctuation guidelines.
Structure:
[Capital Letter] + [Independent Clause] + [End Punctuation (.) (?) (!)]
Examples:
- Please pass the potatoes.
- Carry the boxes. (Note: In imperative commands, the subject “You” is understood/implied!)
- Thomas is a veterinarian.
? Advanced Expansion: Dependent vs. Independent Clauses
Be careful not to mistake a dependent clause for an independent clause! A dependent clause might have a subject and a verb, but it starts with a connecting word (like because, when, if, although) which prevents it from expressing a complete thought. It cannot stand alone.
- Independent: Maria is a letter carrier. (Complete thought)
- Dependent: Because Maria is a letter carrier… (Incomplete thought! What happens because of that?)
