What is a Homophone?
A homophone is a word that sounds just like another word but has a different meaning and spelling [1-3]. For example, the words flower and flour are homophones. They sound exactly the same when you say them, but a flower grows in a garden, while flour is used to bake a cake. Context clues in a sentence help you decide which spelling is the correct one to use.
Parts of Speech and Meanings
Homophones often function as different parts of speech. For instance, roll can be a verb (to move by turning) or a noun (a small bread). Its pair, role, is a noun meaning a part played by an actor. Similarly, bear can be a noun (the animal) or a verb (to support or carry), while bare is an adjective meaning uncovered [8, 9].
