2. Grammar Framework
Point 1: Simple vs. Progressive Tenses
Core Concept: Simple tenses are used for general facts, permanent situations, or established habits. In contrast, progressive (continuous) tenses describe specific actions that are or were ongoing over a finite period of time.
Simple: Subject + Verb(s/es/ed) Progressive: Subject + be (am/is/are/was/were) + Verb-ing
Simple: Subject + Verb(s/es/ed) Progressive: Subject + be (am/is/are/was/were) + Verb-ing
| Simple Aspect (Facts / Habits) | Progressive Aspect (Ongoing Actions) |
|---|---|
Present Simple: Expresses routines, general truths, and fixed schedules.
|
Present Progressive: Expresses actions happening right at the moment of speaking.
|
Past Simple: Completed actions at a specific point in the past.
|
Past Progressive: Parallel or interrupted actions ongoing in the past.
|
Point 2: Simple Past vs. Present Perfect
Core Concept: Use the Simple Past for actions finished at a specific, completely bounded time in the past. Use the Present Perfect for actions that happened at an unspecified time, life experiences, or past actions that carry direct relevance or visible results in the present.
Simple Past: Subject + V2/ed Present Perfect: Subject + have/has + V3/Past Participle
Simple Past: Subject + V2/ed Present Perfect: Subject + have/has + V3/Past Participle
| Simple Past (Finished Time / Specific Anchor) | Present Perfect (Unspecified Time / Current Connection) |
|---|---|
Definite Time Anchors: Uses words like yesterday, last week, in 2018, five minutes ago.
|
Indefinite / Life Experience: Uses words like already, yet, ever, never, recently, so far, many times.
|
