Unit 24: Intransitive Verbs
1. Core Vocabulary
2. Grammar Focus
Point 1: Identifying Intransitive Verbs
An intransitive verb is an action verb that does not have a direct object to receive the action. The action simply stops with the verb, completing a full thought without needing anything or anyone to be acted upon.
Sentence Structure: Subject + Intransitive Verb
| Subject (Chủ ngữ) | Intransitive Verb (Nội động từ) | Meaning (Ý nghĩa) |
|---|---|---|
| The sun | rose. | Mặt trời mọc. |
| He | fell. | Anh ấy ngã. |
| The flowers | grew. | Những bông hoa lớn lên. |
Point 2: Intransitive Verbs with Modifiers
While intransitive verbs do not take direct objects, they are very often followed by adverbs or prepositional phrases. These words do not receive the action; instead, they give extra background context by explaining how, when, or where the action occurs.
Sentence Structure: Subject + Intransitive Verb + [Adverb/Prepositional Phrase]
| Subject | Intransitive Verb | Modifier (Adverb / Prepositional Phrase) |
|---|---|---|
| The athlete | ran | quickly. (tells how) |
| We | sat | on the wooden bench. (tells where) |
| The party | ended | at midnight. (tells when) |
