Unit 23: Transitive Verbs and Direct Objects

Understanding Transitive Verbs

A verb is a word that expresses an action or a state of being. An action verb describes physical or mental action, such as run, think, eat, or decide. Action verbs can be divided into two categories: transitive and intransitive.

A transitive verb is anaction verb that requires the use of a direct object to complete its meaning. It transfers action from the subject to something else. Without a direct object, the sentence might not make complete sense.

A direct object is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb. To find the direct object, find the verb and ask “Whom?” or “What?”.

  • Example: Tana loves her grandparents.
  • Verb: loves
  • Ask: Loves whom?
  • Answer (Direct Object): grandparents.

An intransitive verb does not need a direct object. It may be followed by an adverb or a prepositional phrase, but not a direct receiver of the action.
