Unit 8: Singular Possessive Nouns

Understanding Possession

A noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing. A singular noun names just one person, place,or thing. A possessive noun shows ownership or relationship. It tells us who or what owns or has something [1, 2].

The Golden Rule: To make most singular nouns possessive, add an apostropheand the letter s (‘s) to the end of the word [1, 3-5].

  • The boy has a dog. -> The boy’s dog.
  • The teacher has a book. -> The teacher’s book.

Advanced Tip:If a singular noun already ends in s (like bus or James), you can usually add ‘s as well (e.g., thebus’s tire, James’s house). However, some style guides allow adding just an apostrophe (e.g., Mr. Jones’ house) if the extra ‘s’ makes it hard to say [6, 7]. For inanimate objects, we sometimes use the possessive form (the table’s leg) or the ‘of’ phrase (the leg of the table).
