Understanding Common Nouns

A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. Nouns are one of the most fundamental parts of the English language. They allowus to identify the world around us.

Common Nouns are the ordinary, general names for people, places, animals, and things. They do not refer to a specific individual or unique entity. Unlike proper nouns, common nouns are not capitalized unless they appear at the beginning of a sentence. Examples include teacher, city, dog, and book.

Going Deeper:Concrete vs. Abstract Common Nouns

Common nouns can be categorized further into concrete and abstract nouns.

  • Concrete Nouns name things that you can experience through your five senses (sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch). Examples: table, smoke, noise, apple, fur.
  • Abstract Nouns name ideas, feelings, qualities, or concepts that you cannot physically touch or see. They exist in the mind or heart. Examples: happiness, freedom, logic, patience, courage.
