Unit 6: My Neighborhood
What is a Neighborhood?
A neighborhood is a place where people live, work, and play together. It is made up of many families and homes. In a neighborhood, we see different buildings like houses, apartments, schools, and stores. We also see parks where children can run and play. The people who live in a neighborhood are called neighbors. Neighbors often help each other and work together to make their community a safe and happy place.
In our unit, we learn about community workers. These are people who have special jobs to help us. A firefighter works at a firehouse and uses a big truck. A police officer keeps us safe. A mail carrier brings letters to our homes. Doctors and nurses help us when we are sick. These workers use special equipment to do their jobs. Equipment means the tools and machines they need. For example, a firefighter needs a hose, a ladder, and a helmet. A doctor needs a stethoscope.
We also learn about the order of things. We use the words first, next, and last. For example: First, the fire alarm rings. Next, the firefighters put on their coats. Last, they jump onthe truck!
Phonics Focus: The Letter H
The letter H makes the sound /h/ as in house, hat, and happy. When you say the /h/ sound, it is like a little puff of air. Many words in our neighborhood start with H. We have homes, we say hello to neighbors, and we help each other. Look around your room. Can you find something that starts with the letter H?
We are also learning a new sight word: are. We use “are” when we talk about more than one person or thing, or with the word “you”. For example: “We are neighbors.” “You are my friend.” “Thetrucks are big.” Practice saying “are” in a sentence today.
