Unit 8: Plants and How They Grow
All About Plants
A plant is a living thing that grows in soil or in water. Plants are amazing! They can be huge trees or tiny flowers. To grow big and strong, most plants need four important things: sunlight, water, air, and soil. Soil is the dirt or earth thatplants grow in [1, 2]. Unlike animals, plants cannot move around to find food. Instead, they make their own food using sunlight. This is a very special job!
Plants have different parts. The roots are usually at the bottom, under the ground. They hold the plant in place and drink up water. The stem is in the middle; it carries water up to the leaves. The leaves and flowers are often at the top. We can observe (look closely at) plants to see how they change. Everything starts with a seed. A seed is a special plant part that can grow into a new plant.
