Unit 12: Feelings

Vocabulary: Feelings and Health

[Image: A diagram showing a person with a frown, shivering, and holding a thermometer, illustrating ‘sick’ and ‘unhappy’.]

We experience many different feelings every day. When you are unhappy, you might frown, which means you move your eyebrows together. If youare cold or afraid, your body might shiver or shake quickly. When you are excited or angry, a part of your body might tremble. Other common feelings include feeling calm, nervous, or proud.

Health problems often cause negative feelings. Common issues include a headache, toothache, or a stomachache. You might feel dizzy if you stand up too fast. Accidents can result in a bruise, a scratch, or a cut. If you have a serious problem, like a broken bone, you may need an ambulance to takeyou to the hospital for medicine and rest. More advanced health terms include feeling nauseous (wanting to vomit) or having an epidemic (widespread disease).

Grammar: Should, Because, So, and After

Should / Shouldn’t: We use should to give advice or say what is the best thing to do. For example: “You look tired. You should get some sleep”. The negative is shouldn’t: “You shouldn’t go out late atnight”.

Because and So: We use because to give a reason. “I’m studying English because I want to work in a bank”. We use so to talk about a result. “I want to work in a bank so I study Economics”. So can also express a goal: “I’m saving money so I can travel”.

After: We use after to show the order of events. It can introduce a clause (subject + verb) or a noun phrase. “I’ll take a shower after breakfast” (phrase) or “I’ll take a shower after I eat breakfast” (clause).
