1. Grammar Theory: Demonstratives & Present Continuous
Demonstratives: This, That, These, Those
We use this and these for things that are near us. We use that and those for things that are far away.
- This (singular, near): This shirt here is nice.
- That (singular, far): That shop over there is expensive.
- These (plural, near): These shoes fit me well.
- Those (plural, far): Those jeans in the window are on sale.
The Present Continuous
We use the present continuous to talk about actions happening now or around this time. Form: be (am/is/are) + verb-ing.
- I am looking for a new coat.
- She is paying for her groceries.
- We are shopping at the mall today.
Advanced Tip: We can also usethe present continuous to talk about future arrangements (plans we have made).
Example: I am meeting my friend at the cafe tomorrow. We are going to the sales next week.
