Grammar Focus: The Verb ‘Be’ and Present Simple
The Verb ‘Be’ (am / is / are)
We use the verb be to give information about peopleand places. It describes names, jobs, nationalities, and feelings.
- I am (I’m) a student.
- He/She/It is (He’s/She’s) from Brazil.
- You/We/They are (We’re) happy.
The Present Simple
We use the Present Simple to talk about facts, routines, and things that are generally true. For he, she, and it, we usually add -sto the verb.
- I work in a school. / He works in a hospital.
- They live in acity. / She lives in a village.
- Negative: I don’t work. / She doesn’t work.
Vocabulary: Jobs and Workplaces
People do different jobs in different places. Common jobs include: teacher, doctor, nurse, shop assistant, waiter, police officer, farmer, and driver. Workplaces include: school, hospital, shop, restaurant, police station, farm, and office.
