Unit 5: Simple Present Tense
Grammar Focus: Habitual Actions and General Truths
We use the Simple Present Tense for things that are true in general, for regular actions, and for habits [1, 2].

- Habits/Regular Actions: I brush my teeth every morning. Wego to school every day.
- Jobs/Facts: The postman delivers letters. Hens lay eggs. [2, 3]
Spelling Rules for He/She/It:
- Most verbs: Add -s (e.g., work → works, eat → eats).
- Verbs ending in -s, -sh, -ch, -x: Add -es (e.g., pass → passes, wash → washes).
- Verbs ending in consonant + y: Change y to -ies (e.g., study → studies, fly → flies).
- Irregular: have → has, do → does, go → goes.
Advanced Tip: FrequencyAdverbs
We often use adverbs like always, usually, often, sometimes, and never with the Simple Present Tense to show how often an action happens. These words usually go before the main verb but after the verb ‘to be’ [6, 7]. Example: She always walks to school. He is never late.
