Unit 14: Connecting Words — And / Or

Learning Conjunctions

A conjunction is a joining word. It connects words or groups of words together. In this unit, we look at two very important conjunctions: and and or.

  • And: We use ‘and’ to join similar things or to show addition. It puts things together.
    Example: I have a pen. I have a pencil. → I have a pen and a pencil.
  • Or: We use ‘or’ to show a choice between two things or possibilities. It is often used in questions.
    Example: Do you want some pepper or some salt?

Advanced Tip: While ‘and’ adds items to a list (A and B), ‘or’ usually suggests you can have one, but not both at the same time, or it asks you to choose one,.
