Unit 7: I Can Talk About Relationships

Theory and Language Focus

This unit focuses on idioms and phrasal verbs used to describe romantic relationships, marriage, and being single. Expressions such as be made for each other, tie the knot, meet somebody halfway, and clear the air help speakers discuss relationship dynamics naturally. Other expressions describe conflict, such as drive a wedge between people, walk away, and say something in the heat of the moment. Advanced learners should notice that many of these expressions are metaphorical and often appear in informal conversation.

The grammar focus is expressing preferences and strong wishes: I’d sooner stay single, I’d far sooner travel, I’d give anything to meet the right person, and I’d give my right arm to have another chance.
