Unit 3: Food for Thought
Topic Focus: Food Waste and Sustainability
Food is not just about eating; it is about how we manage our resources. Sadly, much of the food we don’t eat goes into the trash can and then to a trash dump. The UN Environment Programme found that 900 million metric tons of food are wasted each year. Surprisingly, in some places like the U.S., there ismore food waste than plastic or paper. However, there is good news. Companies are finding ways to use food waste to feed animals, make electricity,or power cars. For instance, some restaurants use old oil to power their trucksinstead of gas.
Vocabulary Focus
We use specific terms to describe diets and food preparation. A vegetarian does not eat meat, while a vegan avoids all animal products, including eggs and dairy. A raw food diet consists of uncooked food. When cooking, we follow a recipe which lists ingredients like flour, spices, or vegetables.
Grammar Point 1: Simple Past vs. Past Progressive
We use the Past Progressive (was/were + verb-ing) to describe an action that was in progress at a specific time in the past. We use the Simple Past for completed actions. Often, a short action (Simple Past) interrupts a longer action (Past Progressive). We use when or while to connect them.
Example: I was making the sauce when someone called me.
Grammar Point 2: Indefinite Pronouns
Indefinite pronouns refer to people or things without saying exactly who or what they are. They use some-, any-, no-, and every- combined with -body/-one, -thing, or -where.
- Someone/Something: Used in positive sentences.
- Anyone/Anything: Used in questions and negatives.
- No one/Nothing: Used to mean ‘not any’.
- Everyone/Everything: Refers to all members of a group.
Example: Did you buy anything at the market? Nobody wants to come with me,.
