Unit 1: Present Tenses & Essential Verbs
1. The Verbs ‘To Be’ and ‘To Have’
The verb ‘to be’ describes existence, states, or characteristics (e.g., I am a student, They are tired). We often use contractions in speaking and informal writing (e.g., I’m, You’re, She’s). The negative is formed by adding ‘not’ (He isn’t or He is not).
The verb ‘to have’ expresses possession, ownership, or characteristics (e.g., I have a car, She has blue eyes). In the negative present simple, we use ‘don’t have’ or ‘doesn’t have’.

2. Present Simple vs. Present Continuous
Example: The sun rises in the east. The train leaves at 9 a.m.
PresentContinuous: Use for actions happening now, temporary situations, or future arrangements.
Example: I am studying now. He is stayingwith friends this week.

3. Stative Verbs & The Imperative
Stative Verbs: Verbs describing feelings, senses, or states of mind (e.g., like, know, belong, seem, hear) are rarely used in the continuous form. Exception: When the meaning changes to an action (e.g., I think it’s good vs. I am thinking about it).
Imperative: Used for orders, warnings, or advice. The subject ‘you’ is implied. Negative forms use “Don’t”. (e.g., Open the door. Don’t run.)
