Useful Vocabulary for Writing

People

  • student = a person who learns at school
  • teacher = a person who teaches students
  • friend = a person you like and know well
  • family = parents, brothers, sisters, and relatives

Places

  • school = a place for learning
  • home = the place where you live
  • park = a public outdoor area
  • store = a place to buy things

Activities

  • study = learn something
  • play = do games or sports
  • read = look at words in a book
  • write = make words with a pen or keyboard

Grammar Focus 1: Complete Sentences

Sentence Pattern

Subject + Verb + Extra Information

Examples:

  • I study English.
  • She reads books.
  • They play soccer after school.

A complete sentence needs:

  1. A subject (who or what)
  2. A verb (action or state)
  3. A complete idea

Grammar Focus 2: Using "Be"

Verb "Be"

Subject Be
I am
He / She / It is
You / We / They are

Examples:

  • I am a student.
  • She is happy.
  • They are friends.

Grammar Focus 3: Connecting Ideas with "and"

Use and to join two ideas.

Examples:

  • I like reading and writing.
  • My brother and I play soccer.
  • She is kind and friendly.

Tip: "And" makes writing longer and more interesting.

Worked Example 1

Question: Write a sentence about yourself.

Step 1: Choose a subject → I

Step 2: Choose a verb → study

Step 3: Add information → English

Answer: I study English.

Worked Example 2

Question: Describe a friend.

Use:

  • Subject = My friend
  • Be verb = is
  • Adjectives = kind, friendly

Answer: My friend is kind and friendly.

Worked Example 3

Question: Write about a place.

Ideas:

  • Place = school
  • Be verb = is
  • Description = big

Answer: My school is big.

Writing Tips

  • Start every sentence with a capital letter.
  • End every sentence with a period (.).
  • Use simple words first.
  • Check your spelling.
  • Read your writing again before finishing.
