Can-Do Statement

By the end of this unit, you can understand and use everyday English to talk about camping. You can write simple opinion pieces about camping activities, explaining what you like or do not like and why.

Target Vocabulary

  • tent – a cloth shelter you sleep in when camping
  • campfire – a small fire outside for cooking or warmth
  • backpack – a bag you carry on your back
  • hike – to walk for exercise or fun in nature
  • sleeping bag – a warm bag for sleeping outdoors
  • fishing – catching fish as a hobby

Grammar: Writing Opinions

When you write about camping, you can give your opinion and explain why you feel that way. Use simple sentences like:

  • I like camping because it is fun.
  • I do not like fishing because it is boring.
  • Camping is great because I can spend time outside.

Structure:

  1. Start with your opinion: I like / I do not like / Camping is fun.
  2. Give one reason: because it is relaxing / because I can cook outside.
  3. Optionally, give another reason: and I enjoy hiking in nature.

Worked Examples

Example 1

Write about your favorite camping activity:

Answer: I like sleeping in a tent because it is exciting. I also enjoy sitting by the campfire and telling stories.

Example 2

Write about an activity you do not like:

Answer: I do not like fishing because it is slow. I prefer hiking in the forest instead.

Example 3

Express a general opinion about camping:

Answer: Camping is fun because I can be in nature. I also like cooking food on a campfire.
