Target Vocabulary

Bicycle: a vehicle with two wheels that you pedal to move.

Transportation: the way people or goods move from one place to another.

Truck: a large vehicle for carrying goods.

Grammar: Compound Sentences

A compound sentence connects two ideas with and, but, or, so.

Example: I ride my bicycle to school, and my brother takes the bus.

Example: The truck is big, but the skateboard is small.

Grammar: Using Adverbs to Modify Verbs

Adverbs tell us how, when, or where something happens. They often end in -ly.

Example: The paramedic quickly helps the patient. (How?)

Example: The school bus always arrives on time. (When?)

Example: The skateboard rolls smoothly on the street. (How?)

Example 1: Compound Sentence

Sentence: I have a bicycle, and my friend has a skateboard.

Explanation: Two ideas are joined with and to make one sentence.

Example 2: Adverbs

Sentence: The paramedic quickly drives the ambulance.

Explanation: The adverb quickly tells how the paramedic drives.

Example 3: Compound + Adverb

Sentence: The school bus arrives late, but the technician fixes the tires quickly.

Explanation: But connects two ideas. Quickly describes how the technician works.
