I can understand and use subject and object pronouns in everyday English.

Pronouns help us avoid repeating names and nouns. They make sentences shorter and easier to read.

What Are Pronouns?

A pronoun takes the place of a noun.

Without pronouns:
Anna likes Anna's dog.

With pronouns:
Anna likes her dog.

Subject Pronouns

Subject Pronouns Do the Action

they They live nearby.

Position: Subject pronouns usually come before the verb.

Object Pronouns

Object Pronouns Receive the Action

Examples:

  • Tom helps me.
  • I see him.
  • We know her.
  • The teacher calls us.

Position: Object pronouns usually come after the verb or a preposition.

Choosing the Correct Pronoun

Ask Two Questions

  1. Who does the action? → Use a subject pronoun.
  2. Who receives the action? → Use an object pronoun.

Example:

She calls him.

  • She = subject (does the action)
  • him = object (receives the action)

Using Pronouns in Sentences

Replace Names with Pronouns

Anna is my friend.

She is my friend.

I like Anna.

→ I like her.

John and I play football.

We play football.

The teacher helps John and me.

→ The teacher helps us.

Worked Examples

Example 1

Sentence: Maria likes Peter.

Step 1: Maria → she

Step 2: Peter → him

New sentence: She likes him.

Example 2

Sentence: The teacher helps Jane and me.

Step 1: Jane and me = object

Step 2: Jane and me → us

New sentence: The teacher helps us.

Example 3

Sentence: Tom and Lisa are students.

Step 1: Tom and Lisa = more than one person

Step 2: Use the subject pronoun they

New sentence: They are students.
