Grammar

Present Simple

Use the present simple to talk about habits, hobbies, and routines.

Structure: Subject + base verb (+ s/es for he/she/it)

Examples:

  • She reads books in the evening.

Like / Love / Prefer

Use these verbs to talk about your hobbies and interests.

Examples:

  • I like listening to music.
  • He loves dancing.
  • We prefer reading books to watching TV.

Can for Ability

Use can to say what you can do.

Structure: Subject + can + base verb

Examples:

  • I can play the guitar.
  • She can cook Italian food.

Worked Examples

1. Talking about hobbies:

Question: What do you like to do in your free time?

Answer: I like painting and listening to music.

2. Asking about ability:

Question: Can you play football?

Answer: Yes, I can play football, but I can't play tennis.

3. Comparing preferences:

Question: Do you like reading or watching TV?

Answer: I prefer reading books to watching TV.
