Unit 1: Introducing Yourself

In this unit, you will learn how to share your name, age, and hometown with others. You will also practice asking everyday questions to get to know new people.

1. Vocabulary

Here are important words for talking about yourself and others:

  • name – your personal name
  • age – how old you are
  • country – the nation you come from
  • city – the place you live in
  • hello – greeting someone
  • goodbye – when you leave someone
  • friend – a person you like
  • family – your parents, siblings, etc.
  • live – where you stay
  • work – your job
  • study – learning at school or university
  • like – enjoy something
  • love – like very much
  • favorite – the thing you like best
  • hobby – an activity you enjoy

2. Grammar

2.1 Present Simple: To Be

We use to be to talk about ourselves and others.

  • I am ...
  • You are ...
  • He / She / It is ...
  • We / They are ...

Examples:

  • I am Anna.
  • You are my friend.
  • He is 20 years old.

2.2 Articles: a / an

We use a before words that start with a consonant sound and an before words that start with a vowel sound.

Examples:

  • a friend, a hobby
  • an apple, an idea

3. Worked Examples

Example 1: Introduce yourself

Answer: Hello! My name is Tom. I am 18 years old. I am from Canada. I live in Toronto.

Example 2: Ask about someone else

Answer: Hello! What is your name? How old are you? Where are you from?

Example 3: Talk about likes

Answer: I like music. My favorite hobby is reading. I love my family and friends.
