Unit 2: Describing Tools and Materials

Illustration

In this unit, you will learn basic words for common tools and materials like plastic, metal, hammers, and screws. You will practice describing the objects you use in your daily science or engineering work.

Trong bài học này, bạn sẽ học các từ vựng cơ bản về các dụng cụ và vật liệu thông dụng như nhựa, kim loại, búa và ốc vít. Bạn sẽ thực hành mô tả các đồ vật mình sử dụng hàng ngày trong các dự án khoa học hoặc kỹ thuật.

Tools and Materials in a Project

Exercise Context

In science and engineering projects, we use different objects and materials.

  • Tools help us do a job.
  • Materials are what objects are made of.
  • We can test, measure, and check our work.

Grammar 1: A / An

Use "a" and "an" for one thing

a + consonant sound

  • a computer
  • a pen
  • a machine

an + vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u)

  • an engineer
  • an object
Examples:
This is a laptop.
This is a tool.
This is an object.

Grammar 2: Plural Nouns

One thing → More than one thing

We often add -s to make plural nouns.

Singular Plural
computer computers
pen pens
book books
tool tools
wire wires
Examples:
I have one pen.
I have two pens.

There is one cable.
There are three cables.

Grammar 3: There is / There are

Talking about objects in a place

There is = one thing

  • There is a laptop on the desk.
  • There is a book near the computer.

There are = two or more things

  • There are two cables on the table.
  • There are three tools in the box.
Pattern:

There is + a/an + singular noun
There are + number + plural noun

Worked Examples

Example 1

Picture: One laptop on a desk.

Question: What can you say?

Answer: There is a laptop on the desk.

Why? We use "there is" because there is one laptop.

Example 2

Picture: Three cables on a table.

Question: What can you say?

Answer: There are three cables on the table.

Why? We use "there are" because there is more than one cable.

Example 3

Question: Complete the sentence: "This is ___ machine."

Answer: This is a machine.

Why? "Machine" begins with a consonant sound, so we use "a".

🔑 Đáp án & Giải thích

Ví dụ 1: "There is a laptop on the desk." Dùng "there is" vì chỉ có một chiếc laptop.

Ví dụ 2: "There are three cables on the table." Dùng "there are" vì có nhiều hơn một sợi cáp. Danh từ "cable" đổi thành "cables".

Ví dụ 3: "a machine" vì từ "machine" bắt đầu bằng âm phụ âm /m/. Không dùng "an".

Quick Summary

  • Add -s to make many plural nouns.
  • Use there is for one object.
  • Use there are for two or more objects.
