In this unit, you will learn how to introduce yourself to your new tech team. You will practice talking about your daily programming tasks and your role in the company using simple English.

Grammar 1: To Be (I am / He is / They are)

Use "to be" to talk about people, jobs, and teams.

Subject Verb Example
I am I am a developer.
He / She is She is a manager.
We / They are They are colleagues.

Short forms:

  • I'm = I am
  • He's = He is
  • She's = She is
  • They're = They are
  • We're = We are
Examples:
  • My name is Ben.
  • I am in the testing team.
  • Our manager is very helpful.
  • They are on a call.

Grammar 2: There is / There are

Use "there is" and "there are" to talk about things in a workplace.

  • There is = one thing.
  • There are = two or more things.
Pattern Example
There is + singular noun There is a meeting today.
There are + plural noun There are three colleagues in my team.
Examples:
  • There is an office near my home.
  • There is a new task.
  • There are five people in the team.
  • There are many emails today.

Grammar 3: Simple Questions

Ask questions about work and teams.

Question Word Use Example
What Ask about information. What is your job?
Who Ask about people. Who is in the team?

Question pattern:

  • What + is + noun?
  • Who + is + person?
Examples:
  • What is your job? → I am a developer.
  • Who is your manager? → Sarah is my manager.
  • Who is in the team? → Ben, Kim, and Anna are in the team.

Question: How do you introduce yourself at work?

Model Answer:

Hello. My name is David.
I am a software developer.
