Unit 1: Talking About Devices and Tools

In this unit, you will learn the basic English words for everyday tech devices and tools. You will practise naming your computer, phone, and software to talk about your workspace.

Vocabulary: Tech Devices & Tools

computer – a machine to work, study, or play games

phone – a device to call, text, or use apps

tablet – a small touch screen computer

keyboard – keys to type on a computer

mouse – a tool to move the cursor on a computer

screen – the part of a device you look at

app – a small program for a device

website – pages on the internet

email – a way to send messages online

internet – the global network of computers

file – a saved document or picture

program – software to do tasks on a computer

project – a planned task or work

tool – something to help you do a job

Grammar 1: Present Simple – I use / I have

We use the present simple to talk about habits or things we have.

  • I use my computer every day.
  • I have a tablet at home.
  • She uses email for work.

Example 1:

I use my phone to check apps. ✅

Example 2:

He has a new keyboard. ✅

Grammar 2: There is / There are

We use there is for one thing and there are for more than one.

  • There is a computer on the desk.
  • There are three apps on my tablet.

Example:

There is a mouse next to the keyboard. ✅

There are two files on my computer. ✅

Grammar 3: A / An

Use a before words that start with a consonant sound.

Use an before words that start with a vowel sound.

  • a computer, a phone
  • an app, an email

Example:

I have a tablet. ✅

She uses an email to send a file. ✅
