In this lesson, you will learn simple words to compare two photos. You will also learn how to say which photo you like more and why.

Words for Comparing Photos

Looking at Two Photos

When you compare photos, you can talk about:

Size (big / small)
Light (bright / dark)
Colours (colourful / less colourful)
Feeling (quiet / loud)
Your opinion (beautiful / interesting)

Grammar 1: Comparatives

Comparing Two Things

We use comparatives when we compare two photos.

Adjective	Comparative
big	bigger
small	smaller
interesting	more interesting
beautiful	more beautiful

Pattern:

Photo A + is + comparative + than + Photo B

Examples:

This photo is bigger than that photo.
This photo is more interesting than that photo.
That photo is smaller than this photo.

Worked Example 1
Photo A: bright beach photo
Photo B: dark street photo

Sentence: The beach photo is brighter than the street photo.

Grammar 2: Like and Prefer

Talking About Your Opinion

Use like when you enjoy something.

Pattern:

I like + noun.

Example:

I like this photo.
I like colourful photos.

Use prefer when you like one thing more than another.

Pattern:

I prefer A to B.

Examples:

I prefer this photo to that photo.
I prefer bright photos to dark photos.

Worked Example 2
Two photos: a mountain photo and a city photo.

Sentence: I prefer the mountain photo. It is more beautiful.

Grammar 3: There is / There are for Comparison

Describing What You Can See

Use There is for one thing.

There is a big tree in this photo.

Use There are for two or more things.

There are many people in that photo.

You can compare photos with these sentences.

There is a river in this photo, but there is no river in that photo.
There are more people in this photo than in that photo.

Worked Example 3
Photo A: 10 people
Photo B: 2 people

Sentence: There are more people in Photo A than in Photo B.

Useful Sentences for Comparing Photos

This photo is more beautiful than that photo.
That photo is darker.
This photo is more colourful.
There are more people in this photo.
I like this photo.
I prefer that photo because it is more interesting.
This place looks quiet.
That place looks loud.

Remember!

Use bigger and smaller to compare size.
Use more interesting and more beautiful for longer adjectives.
Use like for something you enjoy.
Use prefer when one thing is better for you.
Use There is and There are to describe what you can see.
