In this unit, you will learn how to describe people's actions in photos using simple present continuous sentences. You will practice talking about what everyone is doing behind and in front of the camera.

Grammar 1: Present Continuous

Use

We use the present continuous to talk about an action happening now.

Pattern:

Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing

  • I am running.
  • He is running.
  • She is eating.
  • They are playing.

Common -ing Forms

  • walk → walking
  • run → running
  • sit → sitting
  • drink → drinking
  • jump → jumping
  • play → playing

Worked Example 1

Photo: A boy is moving fast in a park.

Question: What is he doing?

Answer: He is running.

Photo: A woman has a sandwich.

Question: What is she doing?

Answer: She is eating.

Grammar 2: Imperatives

Use

An imperative gives an instruction or command.

Pattern:

Base verb + ...

  • Look at the photo!
  • Watch the video!
  • Take a photo!
  • Stand here!

We often use imperatives in photography:

  • Look at the camera!
  • Smile!
  • Stand there!
  • Jump!

Grammar 3: Can for Ability

Use

Use can to talk about ability.

Pattern:

Subject + can + base verb

  • I can take a photo.
  • She can run fast.
  • They can jump.

Situation: Maria uses a camera well.

Question: What can Maria do?

Answer: She can take a photo.
