Unit 5: Fun with Pets

In this unit, you will learn simple words and phrases to talk about how you play and have fun with your favorite pets.

Target Vocabulary

play – to have fun with a pet or a toy

run – to move quickly on feet

jump – to push yourself up into the air

catch – to get something that is thrown

toy – a small object for a pet to play with

ball – a round object to play games

park – an outdoor place with grass and trees

outside – not inside a building

friend – someone you like to spend time with

happy – feeling good and smiling

fun – something enjoyable

like – to enjoy something

prefer – to like one thing more than another

enjoy – to take pleasure in an activity

Grammar: Present Continuous

Use am / is / are + verb-ing to talk about actions happening now.

Structure: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing

Examples:

  • I am playing with my dog.
  • She is running in the park.
  • They are jumping and catching a ball.

Grammar: Like / Prefer / Enjoy

We use these verbs to talk about likes and dislikes.

  • like – general enjoyment (I like playing with my cat.)
  • prefer – choice between options (I prefer playing outside.)
  • enjoy – more formal enjoyment (She enjoys running with her dog.)

Grammar: Imperative for Suggestions

Use the base verb to give suggestions or instructions.

  • Play with your pet in the park.
  • Catch the ball!
  • Run outside and have fun!

Vocabulary in Context

The child and the dog are playing in the park. The dog is running and jumping to catch the ball. They are happy and having fun.

Example 1

Q: What is the dog doing?

A: The dog is running and catching the ball.
