Grammar: Expressing Likes and Preferences

1. Like / Prefer + noun / verb-ing

We use like and prefer to talk about things we enjoy.

  • I like chocolate. / I like reading books.
  • I prefer tea to coffee. / I prefer walking to running.

2. Comparatives

We compare two things using comparatives: better, worse, etc.

  • Math is easier than English.
  • Pizza is better than salad.

3. Simple conjunctions

We connect ideas with and or but.

  • I like pizza and pasta.
  • I like tea but I hate coffee.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Talking about your favorites

I love swimming, but I hate running. My favorite sport is swimming.

Example 2: Comparing things

English is easier than French. I prefer English to French.

Example 3: Using conjunctions

I like reading and writing, but I don't like drawing.
