Grammar 1: Present Simple

What is the Present Simple?

We use the present simple to talk about routines, habits, and things we do every day.

Pattern:

Subject + verb

Examples:

  • I study every day.
  • You read in the evening.
  • They exercise in the morning.

For he / she / it: add -s to the verb.

  • She works every day.
  • He watches TV in the evening.
  • It comes here every morning.
Worked Example 1
Sentence: "Anna ______ every evening."
Subject = Anna (she)
Verb = read → reads
Correct sentence: Anna reads every evening.

Grammar 2: Can

Using "Can"

We use can to talk about ability.

Pattern:

Subject + can + base verb

Examples:

  • I can read English.
  • She can play football.
  • They can exercise every day.

After can, use the base verb. Do not add -s.

  • ✓ He can read.
  • ✗ He can reads.
Worked Example 2
Sentence: "Tom can ______ basketball."
Use the base verb.
Correct answer: play
Full sentence: Tom can play basketball.

Grammar 3: Imperatives

What are Imperatives?

Imperatives are commands or instructions.

Pattern:

Base verb + ...

Examples:

  • Read the book.
  • Come here.
  • Drink water.
  • Go to school.

For negative imperatives, use Don't.

  • Don't watch TV now.
  • Don't go outside.

Situation: Your friend is tired.
Instruction: Tell your friend to rest.
Correct imperative: Sleep.
