Grammar 1: To Be (am / is / are)

What is "to be"?

We use am, is, are to talk about people, names, jobs, ages, and countries.

Subject Verb Example
I am I am Lisa.
He / She / It is She is my friend.
You / We / They are They are students.

Grammar 2: Have Got

What is "have got"?

We use have got to talk about family, friends, or things we have.

Subject Form Example

He / She / It has got She has got a sister.

Negative:

  • I have not got a brother.
  • He has not got a car.
Example:
I have got a small family. I have got one brother and one sister.

Grammar 3: This / That

When do we use them?

  • This = a person or thing near you.
  • That = a person or thing far from you.

That is our neighbor, Mr. Lee.

Question: How can you introduce yourself?

Answer:

Hello. My name is Jack. I am 19 years old. I am from Australia. Nice to meet you.

Why? We use "My name is..." and "I am..." to give personal information.

Worked Example 2: Asking Someone's Name

Question: What do you say when you want to know a person's name?

Answer:

A: Hello. What is your name?

B: My name is Emma.

Why? "What is your name?" is a polite question.

Worked Example 3: Introducing Another Person

Question: How do you introduce a friend?

Answer:

Why? Use "This is..." for introductions. Use "is" and "has got" to give information.
