Grammar 1: Past Simple

Use

We use the past simple to talk about actions in the past.

Time words: yesterday, last weekend, last night.

Examples

Remember:
  • go → went
  • listen → listened
  • play → played
  • enjoy → enjoyed

Grammar 2: Can (Ability or Possibility)

Use

We use can to talk about ability or possibility.

Structure

Subject + can + base verb

  • I can sing.
  • She can play the guitar.
  • We can go to the festival this weekend.

Negative: cannot / can't

  • I can't play the drums.
  • He can't come today.

Grammar 3: A / An / The

A and An

Use a or an for one thing.

  • a concert
  • a ticket
  • an audience member

The

Use the when people know which thing you mean.

  • The concert starts at 7 p.m.
  • The audience was happy.

Worked Example 1

Question: What did you do yesterday?

Answer: I went to a concert yesterday.

Why? We use the past simple verb went because the action happened yesterday.
