Exercise Context

Grammar: there is / there are

We use there is for one thing and there are for more than one thing.

Examples:

  • There is a bank near my office.
  • There are many coins on the table.

can for ability

We use can to talk about what someone is able to do.

  • I can save money every month.
  • She can pay for her lunch.

a / an / the

a before words starting with a consonant sound,
an before words starting with a vowel sound,
the for a specific thing.

  • I want a pen.
  • She bought an account online.
  • He paid for the book on finance.

Worked Examples

Example 1: How much is the coffee?

Answer: The price of the coffee is $2. You can pay at the counter.

Example 2: I have $50. I want to save some money.

Answer: I can spend $20 and save $30.

Example 3: Look at the office desk. How many coins are there?

Answer: There are ten coins on the desk.
